    Come experience a broad range of materials and techniques for creating both 2D and 3D art! Students will draw, paint, sculpt and build as they develop new ways of creating from observation, through exploration, and in a collaborative setting. For additional inspiration, we will explore prominent fine art artists and illustrators that will help inspire our creative process. Students will explore a variety of mediums, use their imagination and create multiple pieces of art throughout the week.

  • A Taste of Freedom: Recipes for Passover

    In this cooking class, you will step back in time to savor the food the Israelites ate the night of their departure from Egypt and during the 40 years they spent wandering in the desert. We will use ingredients that are native to the historical region (such as lentils, dates, and za’atar) to create unusual dishes for Passover night and the holiday week. The menu will include flavorful matzah bread, sweet and savory spreads and dips, lentil salad, and matzah brei dessert. Some recipes will be demonstrated by the instructor, others will provide the participants with a hands-on experience. All prepared treats will be served throughout the class or will be packed to take home.
  • Acrylic Paint Night

    Not sure if acrylic painting is for you? Please join us for a single class, (with all materials supplied), designed for beginners who have very little or no experience and want to explore the beauty of acrylic paint. Enjoy an educational, relaxed, and fun evening creating an acrylic painting from start to finish. The instructor will talk you through everything you need to know, from how to mix paint colors to what sort of brush strokes to use.

    Through our Adult Education program, we hope to provide quality lifelong learning experiences that are accessible to a wide range of community members, including high school students.   • Advanced Beginner Bridge

    This Advanced Beginner bridge course is designed to take the beginner player to the next level of both bidding and play of the hand. We will continue to work on no trump techniques and to strengthen trump suit play. In addition, we will spend time on simple defensive techniques (like leads) and attitude signals. If we have the time we will also introduce competitive bidding like overcalls and takeout doubles. All new and fun challenges await!
  • Advanced Beginning French

    Immerse yourself in the beautiful French language and gain a practical command of the vocabulary and grammar through topics that will include greetings, pronunciation, counting, indefinite articles, definite articles, interrogatives, infinitive expressions and a few irregular verbs. The goal of this program is to provide you with the tools to conduct basic conversations and write brief paragraphs about a range of everyday topics, using the present and near future tenses. Students will need to purchase Contacts edition 8 or 9, easily found used or downloadable online.   • Advanced Beginning Spanish

    Do you want to build on your beginning conversational skills in Spanish? Do you have a basic knowledge of the language? In this class, we will review the conjugation of –ar, –er, and –ir verbs in the present tense and then move on to learn the present progressive, the preterite, and reflexive verbs. We will practice simple conversations and learn more of the Spanish language and culture in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Prerequisite: a beginning Spanish class or a basic knowledge of Spanish, e.g., knowledge of the consonant and vowel sounds, numbers, noun-adjective agreement, use of the irregular verbs ser, estar, tener, ir, gustar, and the conjugation of regular verbs in the present tense.   • Advanced French

    In this class, you will continue to iron out material covered in topics covered at the intermediate level and focus on using passé composé versus the imperfect tense and implementing object pronouns and adverbs in both simple and compound tenses. You will also further develop the three basic skills of listening, speaking, and reading while learning about French culture and history. You will need a free downloadable copy of the Grammaire Progressive du Francais Intermediaire (edition 3 by Maia Gregory).   • Advanced Spanish

    This program is for students who want to continue developing their Spanish skills and already know the present, imperfect, and preterite tenses. We will work on activities to strengthen your knowledge of those tenses, plus learn new vocabulary and continue to practice speaking in Spanish. It's a welcoming class of learners.   • Advanced Spanish: Literature

    This class is for those who would like to increase their comprehension of Spanish through readings and discussions. We will also work on grammar and vocabulary. The Pensar y Aprender 2 textbook will be used. Join us!
  • After School Classes for Broadmeadow Students

    Enrollment Policy: Students may only register for NCE classes at the school they currently attend (for example students at Broadmeadow may only enroll in NCE after school classes held at Broadmeadow).     Calling all dinosaur experts and curious explorers! If you are a dinosaur fan or would love to learn more about these remarkable creatures, this class is for you. Students will bring their knowledge and curiosities to life as they become paleontologists. Students will venture outdoors looking for signs of dinosaur life, dig up fossils, morph into dinosaurs themselves, create dinosaur inspired art and share all the facts that make dinosaurs so interesting and mysterious!
  • All Things Spinach, Indian Style: Cook and Enjoy

    Spinach extends its popularity to the Indian continent with great zest. Spinach is a seasonal vegetable, so while it is available, home-cooks try to incorporate it daily in their meal plans. There are hundreds of recipes that use spinach generously. In this class, we will make three popular dishes with spinach or “palak” as it is known in India: Palak-Paneer, a very famous north Indian curry with onions, pungent spices and paneer; Palak Pulao of basmati rice with spinach, tomatoes, brown sugar and garam masala with peanuts and cashews; and Spinach Dal with coconut milk, healthy lentil dal soup with onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic and coconut milk. Let’s go green! Note: A $20 ingredients fee is payable to the instructor in class.

    Are you an animal lover? Do you know everything there is to know about sea creatures, amphibians, jungle cats or birds of prey? Do you find yourself stopping to pet every dog, snuggle every kitten or examine every insect? If so, this class is for you! Students will spend the week sharing all the things they love about the magical and mysterious Animal Kingdom. Through art activities, outdoor exploration, theatrical experiences and in-depth conversations, our admiration for the creatures that bring us such joy will grow!

    Art Explorations is a fun-filled, art-tastic opportunity for young artists—and engineers—to explore a variety of materials, tools, and techniques. Students will create an amazing array of two- and three-dimensional artworks fueled by their own imaginations! Example projects may include (but are not limited to): working with clay, creating pop-up books and kaleidoscopes, making prints with rollers, ink, and sunlight, painting on paper and 3D surfaces, building plaster sculptures, making simple weavings, sewing soft sculptures, and assembling collages and puppets.

  • Art Studio: Creative Expressions: Gr: 6-9, Wk 1

    Both beginner and experienced artists will enjoy this class designed for students who want to create excellent art pieces they will be proud to hang on a wall or give as a gift. Join us to explore famous artist’s techniques and create in similar styles adding your own spin. Explore nature abstracts inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, stained-glass look-alike art inspired by Tiffany and Frank Lloyd Wright, splatter art abstracts inspired by Jackson Pollock and more! Learn about watercolor painting techniques inspired by John Singer Sargeant’s portraits, Paul Klee’s abstract art and cartoonist Bill Watterson (author and illustrator of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes). This isn't fridge art. This is “frame it in the front hall” art! All are welcome. No previous art experience required. Note: Students are encouraged to bring a smock or old shirt to class each day or to wear clothes they don't mind getting dirty. For our Pollock-inspired project we will literally THROW the paint so please dress accordingly.! Repeat students welcome. Returning students are encouraged to explore new muses and inspiration for their week’s creations.
  • Basic Buttercream Decorating

    Learn how to create beautifully decorated cakes that will be the centerpiece of parties and events. Your instructor will teach you the best decorating methods, and you will follow along with the cake and frosting provided. You will learn how to make buttercream frosting. Then, you will use it to frost and fill a cake. Next, you will get instruction in how to use a decorating bag properly to make star tips, rosettes, and shell borders, and for printing with icing. A $20 materials fee is payable to the instructor in class.
