This class will invite students to connect with the natural world through artistic expression and hands-on exploration of the School grounds. By venturing outdoors, students will immerse themselves in the environment to observe nature's intricate lines, shapes, and textures—from the delicate veins of a leaf to the vibrant structures of wildflowers and local wildlife. These mindful observations and collected natural fragments will inspire unique mixed-media projects, where students will experiment with a variety of materials to transform their findings into compelling works of art. From pressing leaves and sketching the environment to creating cyanotype sun prints and collaborating on Andy Goldsworthy-inspired found-object sculptures, students will discover the magic of nature firsthand. This creative journey will foster a deeper appreciation for the environment while encouraging a passion for artistic discovery.
Note: Even on cloudy days or during gentle rain, the outdoors provides endless opportunities for exploration, inspiration and play. Students should be prepared to spend some time outdoors during each class.
Instructor: Cassie Fernandes, Administrative Assistant, English & Social Studies Department, Needham High School
ACTIVE EXPLORATIONS: In addition to the outdoor movement and break times planned by each instructor, students participating in full-day Summer Explorations classes will enjoy a 40-minute active break each day led by highly qualified Needham Public School P.E. and Wellness Instructors. During this time, students will head to the gym or venture outside to get some fresh air and move their bodies. Whether it's a brisk walk around the grounds, high-energy running games and relay races, or exciting team sports and activities, this time is a great way to break up the day, get some energy out, and boost focus for the rest of class!
