Have fun, learn about Needham Community Farm and get community service hours! At the Needham Community Farm, students will prep the farm for fall and winter. Tasks may include weeding, preparing beds for winter, farm clean-up, and more. This is a great way to help your community while satisfying school or other volunteer requirements.
Needham Community Farm provides fresh, healthy, sustainably grown produce to the Needham Community Council Food Pantry, serving over 400 income-eligible families a month. Additionally, their Mobile Market distributes produce at four Needham Housing Authority sites.
Fee covers student supplies and group supervision required by Needham Community Farm.
12 Maximum Students
This program meets Pollard's community service requirement. If class is full, please put your name on the waitlist so we can access demand and create future opportunities for students.
Farm Staff
Avery Westa (they/them), Farm ManagerAvery taught in school gardens and in early childhood education for several years before taking the leap to a full time farming career. Since then, they've managed harvests at Queen's Greens and greenhouse/high tunnel operations at Upswing Farm. This past year, they spent the winter and spring sugaring at Justamere Tree Farm, followed by a few months at Waltham Fields Community Farm. Avery is excited to incorporate their educational and agricultural experience in this role and hopes to increase the amount of food NCF is able to grow for both CSA and donation. Off the farm, they spend most of their time playing old time Appalachian fiddle and baking some pretty good granola and pies.Sasha Fraser (she/her), Assistant Farm ManagerSasha deeply believes in the power of place-based food systems to transform our relationship with the earth and with our own communities, and drive a sustainable and equitable future. She loves working at the intersection of farming and education, where she finds great hope in cultivating young, ecologically-informed environmental stewards and sharing the joy of growing, eating and cooking food. She started her youth farm and food justice journey as a classroom facilitator at Detroit Food Academy and later as Garden Educator for a summer camp. She is currently finishing her Master's in Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and she dreams of opening a farm school.
