Captain Marden's Oyster Education & Shucking Class

Adult Education / Cook and Taste -
Adult Summer 2025

Most New Englanders have developed a taste for oysters, but few of us know much about how they are cultivated and how to shuck them. Spend an interesting evening learning about oyster farming from John Andre of Captain Marden’s. John worked on a farm that produced over 8 million oysters a year between grants in Barnstable, Osterville and East Falmouth. Attendees will learn about seed growth, oyster logistics and different styles of farming. They will also learn how to shuck (6 oysters/person), receive an oyster knife and gloves. Wine and beer will be available for purchase on premises, along with additional oysters. Other tasty Captain Marden’s bites will also be served. Limited to 40.

John Andre

Instructor

John Andre grew up in Needham MA and spent his summers on Cape Cod, where he developed a passion for the ocean, fishing and cooking. After graduating Tufts University in 2022 he began working in the technology industry. After a year in the corporate world, he decided to lean back into his love for the water and seafood by accepting a job with Cape Cod Oyster company. In his time on the oyster farm he developed a deep understanding of aquaculture and oysters. While at Cape Cod Oyster Company he also worked every Saturday at Captain Marden's wholesale branch fulfilling orders for their hundreds of customers throughout Boston, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, eventually transitioning to work at the retail location full-time. John also runs his own raw bar business catering private parties, corporate and charity events.
