The topic of UFOs raises lots of skepticism, but there is research that lends credence to the belief that Earth has had alien visitors. In the first session, the instructor will introduce the latest information, with a special emphasis on Ross Coulthart's book "In Plain Sight," which participants will be expected to read prior to the second class. This book, aimed at relative newcomers to the field of UFO phenomena, explores the journey of Mr. Coulthart, a very well known and respected Australian investigative journalist, from hard-core skeptic to a believer in "high strangeness." The starting point is a provocative Australian UFO encounter that took place in 1991 and continues on to revelations that came to light only in 2020. In the second class, participants will be invited to explore the book in free conversation, but also to think about and discuss the wider implications of the research behind it. If you wish to take a deeper dive into the topic, the instructor will provide a listing of approximately 50 UFO experts who have dug into the topic both in print and video formats. Note: Students will need a copy of “In Plain Sight.” Limited to 20.
Joe Donovan is a semi-retired tax lawyer with a B.A. in philosophy from Cornell and a law degree from the University of Michigan. Since 2017, when the New York Times published a ground-breaking article about a secret governmental program tasked with studying UFOs, Joe has devoted hundreds of hours to researching this topic, from the "nuts and bolts" of alleged craft retrievals to the broader philosophical implications of potentially sharing our planet with some form of non-human intelligence. Are they real? If so, where do they come from? What are their intentions? Why do they seem to be omnipresent and elusive at the same time? Are we getting close to a moment of disclosure that will profoundly affect how we see our own place in the universe?
