  • Advanced Beginning Italian

    Building upon the basic foundation provided in Beginning Italian (-are verbs, few irregular verbs, articles, calendar) you will improve your listening skills and conversational ability through structured dialogues and other practical activities. Begin to communicate more precisely as you learn -ere and -ire verbs in the present and all conjugations in the past tenses. Topics will include: review of expressions of date and quantity, indefinite and definite articles, past tense, interrogatives, and direct object pronouns (Prego chapters 2-4). Students will need to purchase the Prego textbook (editions 6, 7 or 8).     In this section, you will review material studied in the intermediate level and focus on using passé composé versus the imperfect tense, while continuing to develop three basic skills of listening, speaking, reading. French culture will also be covered. You will need a free downloadable copy of the Grammaire Progressive du Francais Intermediaire (edition 3 by Maia Gregory).   • Al Fresco at the Farm: Tuscany!

    Come gather around the outdoor brick oven to celebrate the sensational tastes of Tuscany. Known for open-air brick oven cooking, Tuscan food combines the flavors of the outdoors with fresh ingredients and simple sauces. In this demo-style cooking class and dinner, Chef Thi will teach you to make a Lemon and Herb Spatchcock Chicken with olive pan sauce, Roasted Vegetable Panzanella salad, Farm Succotash and a beautiful Roasted Berry Compote with Mint Gelato. With the farm’s lush fields as your backdrop, you are sure to love this outdoor culinary experience. Guests are welcome to come early and hike the trails on the farm or simply enjoy the views from the comfort of an Adirondack chair. Please note, Powisset is NOT a nut or gluten free kitchen.

    Learn how to create beautifully decorated cakes that will be the centerpiece of parties and events. Your instructor will teach you the best decorating methods, and you will follow along with the cake and frosting provided. You will learn how to make buttercream frosting. Then, you will use it to frost and fill a cake. Next, you will get instruction in how to use a decorating bag properly to make star tips, rosettes, and shell borders, and for printing with icing. A $20 materials fee is payable to the instructor in class.

  • Bicycle Skills and a Beautiful Group Ride

    Are you fairly new to cycling or want to to feel more confident or safe on the road? No matter your bike of choice (road bike, e-bike or hybrid), this class will teach you how to ride safely and with confidence, alone or on a group ride. We will begin with instruction on bike safety checks, accident avoidance techniques, handling and shifting, fixing a flat and protocols for group riding. After, there will be an optional, leader led leisurely, no drop, 18 mile ride on quiet roads, to practice group riding skills. Bring your bike, helmet and gear. Group discussion and some snacks will be provided following the ride.
  • Campfire Guitar for Beginners

    Have you been wanting to learn how to play guitar, with visions of strumming songs around the campfire or on your porch? If that is the case, this beginner class is perfect for you. Instructor Ethan Emery, from Rob's Guitar School, a Berklee College of Music alum, has extensive teaching experience and patience and understanding with beginners, making him the perfect instructor for this class. Marvel as you find yourself playing songs within the first couple of classes! Students must have their own guitar and tuner. Teaching materials will be provided by Rob’s Guitar School during the course of the program and are covered by the course fee.

    Gardening expert, Joanne Neale, invites you to tour her garden and learn about how she lightens her gardening workload through the use of native plants, plant combinations and other gardening techniques. She will share tips that will enable you to establish a low-maintenance garden that is also a haven for birds, butterflies and native pollinators. No dogs, please.
  • Ceramics and Nature

    Spend two relaxing evenings crafting a hand-built vase, bowl, platter or project of your choice, embellished with floral and leaf imprints. The instructor will teach you various ceramic hand-build techniques (including coil, slab and pinch), along with glazing options. You can choose which techniques to incorporate into your piece. Pieces wiil be fired in the instructor’s kiln between classes, so that it will be ready to glaze on the second evening. Note: A $40 materials fee is payable to the instructor in class.

    Perhaps you've heard stories about the stress of the college admissions process. Or you may have already experienced it first hand with one of your children. What you might not know is that you can eliminate a lot of the stress by planning ahead--the earlier the better! This interactive session will give parents of any high school student an understanding of the college admissions timeline, and what they can be doing now to reduce the stress often associated with the process. The class will include tips for busy families regarding SAT and ACT tests, college visits, creating a great college list, and types of financial aid.
  • College Essay: What Parents Should Know and How They Can Help

    The college essay personal statement is arguably one of the most important pieces of writing a student will complete in high school. It is also a type of writing not commonly taught in the classroom; the personal narrative. We invite parents of high school juniors to attend this one-session class to learn more about what admission officers seek in the personal statement. We will also cover approaches in how to answer common supplemental essay prompts and provide tips parents can use to support their student throughout the writing process.
  • College Tours

    Over three days, tour a range of colleges that will enable you to compare types of schools (e.g. large/small, or private/state) and their settings (rural/suburban/urban). You will visit the following colleges and universities*: Bryant College, University of Rhode Island, Emerson College, Tufts University, UMass Lowell and Endicott College. (*This plan may change slightly, but similar colleges/universities will be substituted.) At each college we tour, you will meet with admissions officers who will describe what it takes to get into their school, what majors and programs they offer, and how students spend their out-of-class time. Campus tours at each school will help you find out which schools have the classroom and lab spaces, dormitories, athletic facilities, libraries, computer facilities, student activities, etc. that appeal to you the most. After the visits, you will have a clearer picture of various types of schools, and what you are looking for in a school. It’s not necessary that you are interested in the specific schools being visited; simply seeing the range of schools can help you zero in on what you want and need in a college. Please note that the times listed below are approximate since the schedule of tours and info sessions is not yet finalized. You will be contacted with a detailed itinerary, including specific departure and return times, at least a week before the program begins.

    This class provides parents/guardians and their high school Seniors the opportunity to learn about the Common Application, and to gain tips for completing a high-quality Common Application that will accurately and effectively represent the student to college admissions counselors. The first evening of the class will be held virtually and is intended for both the student and the parents/guardians. The evening will provide an overview and understanding of the elements of the application. The second evening is an in-person, hands-on Common App workshop for students only.   • Disc Golf Fundamentals

    Embark on an exciting journey into the world of disc golf with our two-session introductory class designed for beginners eager to discover the thrill of this dynamic sport. Whether you're a curious first-timer or someone looking to build a solid foundation, this course will provide you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to enjoy the game. Bring the whole family (children must be 10+ years old)! Session 1: Disc Golf Basics and Techniques The first session kicks off with an exploration of the basic principles of disc golf. You will be introduced to the rules, equipment, and etiquette of the game. Get hands-on experience as you learn the fundamentals of proper grip, stance, and throwing techniques for both putting and driving. Session 2: We’ll apply the skills you gained in session one to a real course. Borderland State Park, on the Sharon-Easton line is one of the top courses in the area. It is a course with four different layouts and we will break into foursomes and play the shortest layout.

When you draw closer to nature through art, you also draw closer to yourself. You uncover an innate connectedness that is part of being human and being creative. Engaging our various ways of knowing with, mind, body, and spirit, and incorporating elements of forest bathing and expressive arts, you'll work with simple materials and methods to reflect upon and create from what you are noticing in nature and yourself. Registration includes all supplies and tools for the workshop. No previous art experience is necessary.
  • Eastern Mediterranean Picnic

    Longer days and warmer weather call for a picnic, the perfect way to take a break from it all, enjoy nature, and improve your well-being. Picnics are also an opportunity (or an excuse) to gather with family and friends in a casual setting and enjoy a no-fuss meal under the sky. In our cooking class, you’ll learn to prepare picnic-friendly dishes inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean region, where the weather is mild and eating outdoors in a social setting is a big part of everyday life. We will focus on simple, tasty dishes that are easy to make, travel well, and can be eaten cold while sitting on a blanket, often without utensils. The menu will include pita bread, cauliflower and eggplant tahini, veggie stuffed pastry, lentil salad, and halvah cookies. This in-person class is a combination of demonstration and hands-on experience. We will spend the second part of the afternoon outdoors (if the weather permits), enjoying what we have prepared, engaging socially, and sharing more picnic dish ideas.
  • Enhance Your Acrylic Painting with Various Acrylic Mediums

    Working with new materials has never been this fun or vibrant! In this workshop, you will learn how various art supplies, when used with acrylics, can enhance your paintings, including sand, glass beads, gloss, matte, crinkle etc. The mediums will enable you to add texture and work colors together. The instructor will provide demonstrations and opportunities for students to experiment with the mediums for effects including, building up surface, impasto, texture, gloss, matte, embedding objects into paints, and more. You will love experimenting with these exciting art supplies and you will discover tips on how you can develop your own unique painting approach. All supplies will be provided for this class; students are welcome to bring their own art supplies or small table easel.
  • Establishing and Maintaining a Healthy Lawn

    It takes knowledge and care to establish and maintain a beautiful lawn, but that doesn't mean that you need to hire an expensive service to do the work for you. In this class, you will learn important tips that will enable you to care for your lawn. Topics covered will include: soil health; organic fertilization needs for every lawn type; identifying and rectifying common problems such as weed control, fungus/moss/mushrooms, soil pH and heat stress; required maintenance practices (watering, aeration, detaching etc.). The instructor has over 14 years of lawn care experience and many tips to share.

    Food of India spans from very simple to very stylized, rich and exotic, pleasing the palate of the poor and the elite simultaneously. The British were so enamored by the richness and variety of Indian Cuisine that they have claimed some of the dishes as part of their national cuisine. Let’s recreate some of the time tested, exotic recipes. We will learn to make Vegetable Tikka Masala (Paneer tikkas or cubes in a rich, spiced gravy with nuts, carrots and green pepper), Shreekhand (a dessert made with thickened yogurt, saffron, cardamom and almond-pistachio medley), and finally Green pulao (basmati rice cooked with cauliflower, potatoes, and peas with a cilantro chutney base), Come, explore this exotic cuisine with Shruti Mehta. A $20 ingredients fee is payable to the instructor in class.
